| Information about Rogaine |
|
Rogaine is the trade name in the USA for minoxidil, a topical treatment applied to the scalp to counteract baldness. It is sold in the USA without a prescription. Men use Rogaine to treat a receding hairline, and women generally use it to treat a diffuse thinning of hair throughout the scalp. Millions of people buy Rogaine every year. Rogaine results usually take several months to be significant. The new hair growth lasts only as long as the drug is used. Therefore, if a person stops using Rogaine, hair loss will resume within a few months. People who have heart disease or high blood pressure should ask their doctor before trying Rogaine, because problems are possible if too much of the drug is absorbed. People who have a sunburned scalp or an otherwise irritated scalp should ask a doctor before using Rogaine, because these problems may cause too much of the drug to be absorbed. You can use hair color, permanents, and relaxers if you use Rogaine, but the scalp should be washed just before using any of these. Rogaine should not be used 24 hours before and after using hair color, a permanent, or relaxer. You apply Rogaine when your hair and scalp are completely dry. Use the prescribed amount, starting in the center of the affected area and working outward using the provided applicator. Wait at least 4 hours before shampooing after applying Rogaine. Avoid getting Rogaine on any other parts of the body, and wash your hands after you finish applying Rogaine. If you accidentally get Rogaine in your eye, nose, or mouth, flush with cool tap water. If you're using the pump spray version of the drug, be careful that you don't breathe in any of the spray. Be sure to follow the dosing directions given on the packaging or the dosing directions given to you by your doctor. If you forget a dose of Rogaine, apply it as soon as you can, unless it's almost time for the next dose, in which case you can go back to your regular dosing schedule. Don't "double up" if you miss a dose. Rogaine can stain bed linens, hats, and clothing, so it's important to let it dry completely before changing clothes or going to bed. Rogaine side effects are usually mild, and limited to irritation or itching at the site where it is applied. You should contact your doctor if you have other side effects, or if itching or irritation is excessive. |
